Surprise! It's a Spring Snowstorm

It happens every year.
I thought spring had arrived,
with warm days, pink blossoms, and fresh young green things poking up through the ground.
I had the urge to go to the nursery and fill my shopping cart with colorful annuals.
But, once again, Mother Nature fooled me.

I'm so glad I didn't give in to that urge.
In the Rockies, the weather can change drastically overnight.
And that's exactly what happened.

I woke up this morning to about six inches of wet, heavy snow
with more coming down throughout the day. I bundled up, grabbed my camera,
and headed out to take a few pictures while it was still fresh and white.

My poor allium blooms look so sad as they hang their heads.

I took a broom along to knock off some snow from the trees and shrubs
but ice had formed on the branches and wouldn't let go.
I hope none of the limbs have snapped.
Sometimes, it's best to just let the ice melt slowly.

Still, it's always magical to see how the landscape changes when it snows.
These pink bleeding hearts really pop against their fluffy white blanket.

And these watering cans look so fanciful,
with their stoles of white faux fur.

This chandelier is festive with white "snow candles."

I bought this old bicycle at a yard sale to use as a garden decoration,
then intentionally left it outside to rust.
I think this wet snow might speed that up a bit.

Thank goodness I brought my few potted plants inside last night.
I'm sure they'd be shivering this morning in the frigid temps
but here they are in the sunroom, basking in the sunshine
while the winds howl outside.

Hopefully, this is the last snowstorm of the season
and we can all go shopping soon.

  1. If it is of any comfort, last year, we had snow very late...on the palm trees. Yes, even in the south of France, snow can land as late as Cinco de Mayo. It's called the Ice Saints (the saints' days are noted on the evening weather reports all year round).
I hope your bicycle turns out just as you hoped.

    1. Hard to imagine snow on palm trees in the south of France! Thanks for sharing the interesting info about the saints' days; had no idea. Today it was 80 degrees and everything survived except for the bleeding hearts.

What a wonderful treat to see your lovely home tour and a bit of your garden.

  3. Pat, here in hot Texas I just can't even imagine waking up to snow at this point! On the other hand, you probably can't imagine running the air conditioner most of the year.

Thank you so much for allowing me to share your pretty home. I'm honored. :)

    1. Hi Stacey! Ha! We didn't even have an air conditioner until a year ago and it's just a little one in the bedroom window. Think I'll take the heat over snow any day. I want to thank you again for my home tour on your blog. Have heard from some new blog friends because of it which I appreciate greatly. Your comments were all so sweet. Big hugs to you, Pat

  5. Hi Sis, What a beautiful blog this week. The first pic of the backyard is great. The tree is so pretty with all those short lived pink blossoms. So glad that you got a picture of it before the second picture. The alliums looks as though they have white toboggans on. So cute. The bleeding hearts really don't look like they suffered any damage. Mine are all up and blooming on the woods edge. I absolutely envy you of your bike with the basket. I checked out Stacy's blog. What nice compliments she gave you and all comments that were on her blog about your cozy home. Love it!!!!

    1. Thanks so much Jan! I love hearing your comments. The bleeding hearts took the brunt of it as most branches snapped off. The rose of sharon turned black and crispy. Everything else looks pretty good but a lot of the neighborhood trees got hit hard. Hope everything will survive. Hugs, Pat

  6. Oh my, snow in May!! We are having what we locals here in NC call Blackberry Winter, usually no snow but a definite turn to the cooler side. High today was 57 after a couple of weeks of 70s. Low tonight will be 40, brrr, ready for spring. At least it isn't cold enough to kill off my flowers, and I hope yours survive.

  9. Springtime in the Rockies...always an adventure. The past two years we've had snow in the first week of May and one of them even had snow on Mother's Day. I'm not putting out any annuals until mid-month. Just in case. 😇 Have a gorgeous weekend-should be nice and toasty today.

  10. Oh no, Pat! I came over to congratulate you on your feature over at Stacey's blog (wonderful!), I see Mother Nature just played a wicked joke on you! How sad to see the alliums, and I do believe your bleeding hearts are crying. :( I admire your eye for the beauty through the snowpack and love that description of watering cans "with their stoles of white faux fur." :) We'll be having close to freezing temps on Sunday night....brrr. I'll be working on my containers shortly thereafter. Enjoy your weekend.

  13. OMGoodness! Snow in May. I thought we had unpredictable weather here in the upper Midwest!

    1. Thanks so much Jane! Am so glad you found my blog and hope you come back often. I really appreciate your kind comments. I'm originally from the midwest too; at least we have blue skies and lots of sunshine here in Colorado (except when it's snowing!). Hugs, Pat

  14. The photos are so beautiful -- but they make me sad, what with your pretty flowers coming out. Here in Michigan it is unseasonably cold and much rain -- but we've not managed snow for a few weeks!

I come via Monday Social and so delighted to have found you. I'm looking forward to following! ~jeanie from Marmelade Gypsy

  15. Okay - I'm taking a page from YOUR outlook on this event! I've been whining for days about the cold temps and rain here in Midwest. We've had frost advisories for past three nights. BUT no snow like that!! I love how you found the beauty even in the midst of the snow and I have to admit, those bright colors and watering cans with the snow really DID make a pretty picture!

  16. We had the same thing happen in New Mexico. I don't have pretty flowers to worry about though.

  17. I think snow is lovely ... as long as I don't have to drive in it! While it's been years since I've lived in an area that gets snow ... it always snowed when I had the urge to plant! Ha! Happy Monday!

  18. Pat,
Here we are in north Texas wondering when we will have to turn on the air conditioner... So far, only once, when I had book club over for lunch and discussion. As soon as the last one left, I turned off the AC, since we like to open the doors and windows as long as we can.
Fingers crossed for you that this is the last snowstorm this spring...

  19. I'm so glad that Stacey featured you! Your home and garden are wonderful.

The snow is beautiful, but I can't believe it's still coming this late in the year. Luckily, we escaped a Springtime snow this year. I hope it warms up for you soon :)

  22. We often get a spring snowstorm that catches us off guard, but we have been lucky this year, no snow in May!! It is pretty and knowing that it won't last makes it tolerable! Poor flowers, hope they survived

  23. Wonderful photographs, Pat--you really captured the essence of spring snowfall :) One year, here in Upstate NY, we had 4" of heavy snow fall on May 18th--crazy! Thanks so much for linking up with Vintage Charm--
