French Country: LBB - Little Black Bathroom

Every woman needs an LBD -- Little Black Dress. Right?
But how about an LBB -- Little Black Bathroom?

My little bathroom was rather boring until I decided to add black to the mix.
Black and white is such a classic French palette.

A black ribbon on some lacy curtains,

a black metal plant stand holding a white and black-trimmed enamel bowl,

a black wire basket underneath to store toilet paper, bath things or magazines,

and a black rug on the white tiled floor gives this tiny bathroom some French drama.

French Country bathrooms are known for style, feminine touches, comfort and romance.
It's easy to add these to any bathroom without a lot of fuss or expense.

An old ironstone dish holds some fancy soaps from Provence.

A French champagne bucket is handy for flowers or as a wastebasket.

Open shelves contain towels and an ironstone chamber pot.

Metal or tin objects like this old medicine cabinet,
displaying vintage mirrors and bottles, lends a feeling of days gone by.

This tin clock is a thrift store find, the lavender a perfect accent

Purple towels and a black vintage purse add a pop of color and a touch of whimsy.

A framed piece of artwork like these four colorful French postcards
adds another dash of black and a bit of romance.

An antique mirror above the sink or on the wall is one of the easiest ways
to bring an old-world feel to your bathroom.

A diminutive chandelier brings all four French style elements to this room
and amps up the glam factor.
The light is on a dimmer. Ooh la la.

If you have room, which sadly I don't, you could incorporate a Frenchy antique,
perhaps a bench or chair or even an armoire for storage.
No space? How about a French market basket to hold rolled-up bath towels?

Do I want black and white octagonal floor tiles and a lovely old clawfoot tub?
Yes, of course!
But that will have to wait for a major renovation.
Meanwhile, draping a pretty cloth curtain on your shower rod
and a small black rug on the floor adds texture and softness.

Just because you have a tiny, tired bathroom doesn't mean you can't jazz it up
French Country style!

  1. I love this! My tile is white with touches of black so this would be a great option. Thanks so much for the ideas. Pinning.

    1. Thank you Nikki! I'd love to have a touch of black in my all-white tile. If I had some wall space in my bathroom, I think black and white photography would look perfect. Hope you have a great week.

  3. As you say, not everybody has the budget to rip out their bathrooms and redo. You make the most with what you have--and in your case, classic white tiles help a lot. The knobs on your faucet are so pretty, too! Honestly, most of the bathrooms I've seen in France are pretty atrocious. Probably because they were done in the 1970s (that's when the houses in my village got indoor plumbing), or because they were crammed into little spaces like hallways, former maid's rooms or whatever. And you can't just run pipes where you want when you have 2-foot-thick stone walls. Sure, some people dedicate a former bedroom to a grand, luxurious bath. But not everybody has a bedroom to spare.
Great job on your bathroom. BTW, I bought those same Toulouse-Lautrec prints for my apartment when I first moved to Europe.

  4. A really pretty simple update. One of the biggest differences between Europe in general and the USA are our bathrooms. Ours in Europe tend to be small! With the exception of the family bathroom I grew up with in our English farmhouse, it was the size of a large bedroom and always freezing cold, with a gigantic claw foot tub, back then I loathed it all, nowadays I would die for a bathroom like that! Our en suite master bathroom here in France is minute, it's probably not a lot bigger than our shower cubicle alone was in the USA! However, I love it. We totally redid it, it used to have draped fabric on the walls tacked to wooden boards to cover up the irregular shaped walls, need I go on! We added a new sink unit and a fabulous power shower, white tiles, solid glass front and that's all we could fit in! But you know what, my point is, go for it, a bathroom doesn't have to be huge to be luxurious, small is good! Have a wonderful weekend xx

    1. Thank you Susan! Small is good but I'd love to have just a bit more space for a separate shower and a soaking tub. My bathroom is always freezing too! Enjoy the weekend.

    2. I just got back to this! In the States we had a huge bathroom, I mean it was big enough for a bedroom and a bathroom easily! Here our en suite is tiny as I said, and I love it, I thought I wouldn't, I mean it is tiny, but I simply adore it and the best part, it's always warm! Unlike the other bathrooms in the house which are typically cold, a European thing, mine is always warm and toasty, so I am happy with small!!!

  6. I'd love to be able to display pretty items in the bathroom; however at the moment practicality is winning out. I keep as little as possible on display so that cleaning is quicker!

    1. Thank you for visiting Catherine! I hear what you're saying. I essentially have no vanity space, just a sink, but it works out and just one less thing to clean! Enjoy the weekend.

  26. Greetings,
I know I'm late to the party, but you just solved a huge problem for me!!! My bathroom is sort of olive drab, and new paint is NOT on the horizon! However...I think your black and white would be stunning in there...I just have to find a small piece of fabric for the curtain and lid cover, that is white/cream with a touch of green. I already have black, white and cream towels...the black from our second bath that has a lot of black and red :^) I will watch the sales for a small black and white runner as well!
Many thanks for your unwitting help :^)...I appreciate what it takes for you to publish a wonderful blog!
    Blessings,
    J
