The Green Door

Do you remember that old 1950's song "The Green Door"?
I recall dances in our basement where the song would play over and over
while neighborhood kids jitterbugged.

As the younger sister in our family, I always wondered what was behind the Green Door
and why it was such a big secret . . .

Here are a few of the lyrics:

Midnight, one more night without sleepin'
Watchin', til the morning comes creepin'
Green Door, what's that secret you're keepin?

There's an old piano and they play it hot behind the green door.
Don't know what they're doing but they laugh a lot behind the green door.
Wish they'd let me in
So I could find out what's behind the green door.

This old classic popped into my head this week in the mountain cabin
as we painted our front door and window trim green.

Now I can't get it out of my mind.

The week before, we'd caulked and primed the window sills,
thinking we'd better get some protection on the wood before the winter snows hit.

Since this is an old historic miner's cabin,
we feel, as stewards of the past,
that we should protect and preserve it for future generations.

This week we stayed overnight in the cabin and it was so relaxing because we knew
we didn't have to drive back to Denver on the same day we'd arrived.
We also knew Roxy was in good hands with "Auntie Tonda" back home
so we didn't worry about her.

So we were ready to paint.
The windows had previously been painted green but they didn't look like they'd been primed.
The paint was peeling with deep cracks in the sills where snow had settled.

Here you can see this window was in pretty sad shape.

We tried to match the green paint with these pictures and were happy to see
it matched the roof shingles perfectly!
The sill got a coat of chocolate brown paint that blended well with the weathered logs.

Here's the finished window.

Now on to the front door. Here's a "Before" picture.
You will see the "After" picture at the end of this post.

Wonder why someone painted the ends of the logs red.

They sure look better dark brown.

We may put another coat of green paint on the front door next time but for now . . .  finished!
That green door and green roof really pop while blending in with the natural landscape.

BEAR UPDATE . . . Yes, he's still around.
Another neighbor stopped by to tell us the bear had visited her cabin.
She had several snacks laying around inside while she wasn't home.
The bear simply smacked the levered doorknob, opened the door,
and proceeded to "eat his way through the cabin."
She warned us not to leave any food around.
OK!!!

Everything I've read online says black bears are looking for food to eat, not humans
and will likely run away from us unless we make aggressive moves.

So, my friends, have you been humming "The Green Door" while reading this post?
I have!
I wonder what secrets it's been keepin."

  5. Such an amazing makeover on your cabin! I had no idea that a bear could smell food inside a building. It's sad they have to go that far to find food sources. Will your dog ever be able to come there? Or is the altitude just too hard on her?

    1. Thanks for stopping by Mary. The cabin makeover has been so much fun and a lot of work. I'm afraid our dog will not be able to go back to the cabin. Altitude just wiped her out (and me too although I'm getting used to it as long as I go slowly). Hugs, Pat

  11. I have a sweet friend that used to sing and play that song. Her daughters decided that she needed to move to Idaho and be closer to them. I understand, but when I exchange emails with her, I can tell that she misses her old jam partners and playing in our geezer band :) It's hard to start over making new friends when you're in your later years in life.

  12. Hi Sis, I am trying to put another reply on. It looks so cozy at the cabin. The paint job was a real improvement. Brad said it really looks cozy. Must be a family expression. Since I talked with you about the latest I won't write anymore about it. Just want to see if I can post a comment.
